STEPP-ON-UP

The Scientific Translational and Experimental Postbaccalaureate Program in Oncology for Underrepresented Populations (STEPP-ON-UP) prepares scholars from underserved backgrounds to pursue doctoral-level training in science, medicine, and cancer research (e.g., PhD, MD). This year-long, research-intensive program places post-baccalaureate scholars in Moores Cancer Center research laboratories, where they work alongside faculty mentors in state-of-the-art laboratories, gaining hands-on experience in cancer research and cutting-edge scientific techniques.

Beyond the lab, STEPP-ON-UP Scholars will work with the Moores Cancer Center Community Outreach and Engagement Office (COE) to understand cancer disparities, prevention and early detection strategies, population health needs and data tools, and how research translates into real-world community impact. Scholars will explore how community voices shape research priorities and discover the powerful role outreach and engagement play in advancing cancer health equity. STEPP-ON-UP Scholars will also have scheduled time to shadow clinicians, rotate through the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), and participate in professional development workshops focused on scientific communication and graduate school preparation.

The STEPP-ON-UP program culminates in the completion and presentation of an independent research project, equipping scholars with the experience and confidence to advance toward graduate-level education and leadership in cancer research and healthcare.
